The Rebirth of Scottish Rock

14th May 2009
Today in general there are few musicians around: there are fewer bands and certainly far less competent musicians than even ten years ago. Whether we blame it on the internet, multi-national record companies selling the heart and souls of the bands they support or just the general apathy of the modern youth it is certainly undeniable that music isn’t really what it used to be.
However to apply this generalisation to all musicians today and to the few bands that are really making an effort would be an insult. Though the market is highly saturated by highly un-remarkable ‘popular sound’ bands there is an emerging underground in Scotland which includes, to no exception, the music scene of Dundee.
One such band that fits into this group is Kaboom! from Perth. On the 24th of May the two bands will take to the minute stage of the Balcony Bar, along with Dundonian rockers Goom and Cascade Palace, as part of a concert celebrating this upcoming scene.
Hitting the stage with riff based blues rock Kaboom! include in their influences Neil Young, Metallica, The Rolling Stones and Guns ‘n’ Roses; and this is not lost in their sound. An eclectic yet consistent mix of these styles pays off for the five-piece who seem to manage to tackle their own, well written, material and covers with equal gusto. Live the bands are loud, electrifying and fun. There is little pretention in the music – it is, pure and simple, rock and roll.
Though this kind of music is not everyone’s taste, being of the slightly heavier persuasion, it is difficult to deny the Perth rockers power and talent. Having recorded a debut EP and having notably played the Inverness Ironworks Kaboom! seem on the edge of something special. If any of their previous gigs have been anything to go by then the concert at the Balcony Bar should be entertaining for all involved.
